Both boys and girls make wonderful Havanese companions. Here is how they compare, in plain language, so you can choose with confidence.
Male and female Havanese are both affectionate, playful and people-loving. The breed standard describes the same size range and the same cheerful companion temperament for both. In everyday life, a puppy’s own personality, socialization and training matter much more than whether it is a boy or a girl.
With us, the adoption fee is $750 for every puppy, boys and girls alike. See our available Havanese puppies.
The AKC breed standard gives one height range for the breed, 8½ to 11½ inches at the shoulder, for males and females alike. Adults commonly weigh about 7 to 13 pounds. Individual dogs vary, so a boy is not automatically bigger than a girl.

Havanese were bred as companion dogs, and both sexes are typically social, gentle and eager to be close to their people. You may hear that boys are more cuddly or that girls are more independent, but these are generalizations, not rules. Every puppy is an individual.
Early socialization, gentle positive training and plenty of time with the family shape a puppy’s adult personality far more than sex does.
Boys and girls can both be fully house-trained. Small breeds can take a few months to be reliable, and the same routine works for both: frequent potty breaks, quick praise and patience. Our puppy care guide walks you through it.
