All colors are welcome

The AKC and Havanese Club of America breed standard says it simply: “All colors and marking patterns are permissible and are of equal merit.” No color is preferred over another, so you can choose the puppy whose personality fits your family.

Havanese colors include white, cream, gold and apricot, red, chocolate, black, silver and sable, with patterns such as parti-color (white with patches of color) and tan points. The one rule about color is pigment: chocolate Havanese have brown pigment on the nose, lips and eye rims, and all other colors have black.

Puppy colors can change

Many Havanese lighten or darken as they grow, and sable puppies in particular often lighten as their adult coat comes in. The color you see in a puppy photo may not be exactly the color of the grown-up dog.

Coat care for every color

Every Havanese coat, whatever the color, needs regular brushing to stay soft and tangle-free. Light coats such as cream and white tend to show tear stains more, so a gentle daily wipe under the eyes helps. Our puppy care guide covers brushing, bathing and tear-stain care.
